Read the full 'Myth vs. Fact' document TikTok sent to advertisers after US lawmakers grilled its CEO
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testifying in front of Congress on Thursday. This story is available exclusively to Insider subscribers.TikTok sent advertisers a document titled 'Myth vs. Fact' in the wake of its CEO's Congressional testimony. Those include concerns about TikTok's ties to the Chinese government and how it guards user data., the company sought to reassure advertisers they had nothing to be concerned about.
The hearing came as calls to ban the TikTok app in the US, or force a sale of its US assets, over national security concerns have intensified. Congress barraged TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew with questions about the social media app's guards on user data, its efforts to counter misinformation and prevent harm to children, and its ties to China via its parent company ByteDance.
On Friday and over the weekend, TikTok emailed advertisers and their agencies a document entitled"Myth vs. Fact," three sources who had received those emails said.In the document, the company again distanced itself from concerns it could be forced to hand over data on US users to the Chinese government, or that TikTok could deliberately show content that was favorable to the Chinese Communist Party.
"TikTok does not permit any government to influence or change its recommendation model," the document, which was obtained by Insider, states. Advertisers are a core constituency for TikTok, which last week said it had 150 million monthly active users in the US. TikTok's US ad revenue is forecast to grow by 36% to reach $6.83 billion this year, despite the looming threat of a potential ban, according to Insider's sister company Insider Intelligence.
