Lego has launched a website with AI-powered text instructions, its 2nd pilot for the blind this year

Share to twitterLego's new text-based instructions will make it easier for blind people of all ages to build and play.Matthew Shifrin's heavy-lift started when he was barely a toddler “just five or six,” he recalls, “He and a family friend, Lilya Finkel, were driving through a residential neighborhood in the Boston area where he grew up. “She suddenly pulls over by the side of the road and orders me out of the car.

The pilot, through year-end, will allow Lego to gather and study feedback and make improvements as it continues to add sets. Hiccups are expected, said Fanella Charity, a creative director with Lego’s Play Group who is working on the Friends sets for the launch. For example, she says, “consumers like to know where they are in the building process” but the pilot does not include a progress bar. Such tools help builders maintain motivation on larger projects, she notes.

Matthew was able to follow these text-based instructions and finish the project, learning about Middle Eastern architecture along the way. “I was ecstatic,” he said. And he knew that Lilya had hit on something with her Braille translation of the graphical instructions. The discovery was something he “realized I couldn’t keep to myself.

The readable instructions aren’t just a boon to blind youngsters: blind parents of sighted children will be able to read instructions to their younger children or simply follow along – or work right beside – their older kids.Lego launched its Braille Bricks
