Garcia: Let’s declare our independence from our own worst impulses
People line the banks of Woodlawn Lake in preparation for the evening's fireworks display during Independence Day celebrations hosted by the City of San Antonio on Tuesday, July 4, 2017. They were also joined by thousands who turned out to take part in July 4th event which included food, live music, carnival rides and, of course, fireworks to cap off the event. The United States approaches its birthday in a collective funk.
That’s what life was like in the United States in July 1976, as a conflicted country celebrated its Bicentennial. We were locked in the Cold War with the Soviet Union, dealing with an energy crisis, battling runaway inflation and worried about pollution. We see little children getting murdered in their own classrooms and politicians doing little to address it.
