I urge you to read Peg Tyre’s Scientific American magazine article Tyre summarizes research from experimental voucher programs in New York, Ohio, Washington, D.C., Indiana, Louisiana and Wisconsin. Students vouchered into schools showed slightly lower performance in math and reading than do their contemporaries of equal ability who remained in public schools.

Most revealing are results from Chile, where voucher programs have been in effect universally since the 1980s. Vouchered private schools have become more stratified socioeconomically than corresponding non-voucher public schools because students and their parents opt for schools where students are of their own socioeconomic class, not for schools with the best academic credentials. Tyre cites preliminary evidence for the same trend in U.S. schools.

Think carefully where we place our dollars for education. Do we want to finance a system that encourages stratification ? Or should we improve the existing public schools where students encounter people of various backgrounds and they can be “educated” on
