Re: “Diversify energy sources,” Your Turn, Dec. 31:

I don’t believe that any sane or reasonable person will deny that we need to wean ourselves from fossil fuels. However, we can’t just flip a switch or pass edicts to stop using them. There needs to be a transition where we use all of the above to bridge the gap. Electric cars are still too expensive and the infrastructure still isn’t available to support everyone driving one. Solar and wind are not reliable sources in winter months when energy is most needed.

California should be a frightening example. They want people to use electric cars but don’t have the energy to allow people to charge them. A friend’s daughter lives in California, and they are penalized if they use electricity during certain time periods. Electric cars seem to be getting more dependable, but they still don’t have the range or battery life to be broadly useful. Positive advancements are being made with nuclear power, and American natural gas is both abundant and the cleanest burning in the world.

If we are reasonable about using what we have to allow a sane transition, I am confident we can reach a greener solution acceptable to all.
