Child advocate Lisa Broda wants the province to move quicker after investigating a number of serious incidents over the past year.
In a follow up to investigations reported last year, advocate Lisa Broda’s latest annual report stated she’s left with questions about whether the Ministry of Social Services will be able to fully achieve goals that aim to improve the system.
In March 2021, she released an investigation into the oversight of group homes, which are typically contracted out to third-party providers.In one Prince Albert home, it found there were poorly trained staff, a lack of supervision and nurturing, medical neglect, harsh treatment, insufficient nutritious food and operational discord.
While Broda’s report said the ministry has accepted recommendations that aim to enhance the system, the pace in adopting the measures has been “insufficient.” “I really will definitely be meeting with the ministry in mid-May, and I’m going to be expecting a robust report on where this oversight mechanism is and what we’ve called for in our recommendations,” she said.
