Nine Anchorage Assembly members, at a special meeting Friday, unanimously approved the authorization of litigation on questions related to the Draft Fish and Wildlife Program for the Eklutna Hydroelectric Project.
The Assembly's decision Friday enables the Assembly to be able to open a lawsuit to stop or delay the draft plan from going forwardANCHORAGE, Alaska -
The draft program was a requirement of a 1991 agreement by the federal government to address concerns raised about the project’s impacts on fish and wildlife. The deadline for that plan to be submitted to the governor is April; the governor has until October to make a final decision.“The 1991 agreement does not provide for an opportunity to take a pause,” Chugach Electric’s communications manager Julie Hasquet said on Monday.
Hasquet said that both Leggett and the Assembly were consulted during the creation of the draft plan. “Our hope is that we’re able to have some firm and frank conversations with the participants, the signatories of the 1991 agreement because avoiding litigation is the best path forward,” he said.
