The Hawaii National Guard expects another 200 staff members to arrive in the coming days, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Sunday.
The death toll is expected to rise. Maui Police Chief John Pelletier called on people with missing loved ones to submit DNA samples to help identify remains, warning that it will take time to do so because some are so badly damaged that they disintegrate when picked up.
Some Maui residents have turned to social media to plead for information about their loved ones.there should be no excuses for warning sirens on Maui not sounding, but indicated that temporary housing and search-and-rescue efforts are a priority over accountability at the moment.
