AN ANTONIO — After a year of working at an inpatient residential treatment center outside San Antonio, Christine Varela Mayer and her colleagues found that former patients called back with stories of frustration.Mayer, who has a Ph.D. in psychology, wanted to offer a safe place for people recovering from alcohol and drug addictions. It put her on a mission to normalize sober living and sober activities in San Antonio.
“It’s important for folks in recovery to celebrate life like everyone else. The most we can do is support each other. I encourage anyone to reach out to professionals who can help them navigate the holidays.” Blue Heron Recovery, a private outpatient chemical dependency facility, opened in March 2021. It’s owned and overseen by licensed chemical dependency counselor Christine Mayer with her husband, Dr. Paul Mayer.Mayer said her husband, who worked for more than 20 years in hospital emergency rooms and trauma centers, saw the side of substance abuse that left people clinging to life. Now, she said, he’s seeing people who had those experiences living their best life in recovery.
