Rather than give men another chance to let us down in 2023 , I propose we look elsewhere for our heroes. Specifically, toward one particular hero: Melissa Viviane Jefferson or, as you might know her, Lizzo.
This isn’t a “Lizzo for President” proposal . But it is a plea for us to tune out the incompetent, insolent men flooding our feeds, and focus on leaders like Lizzo who are correctly using their platforms. In early December, when Lizzo was honored with the People’s Champion award at the People’s Choice Awards, she shared her initial hesitation to accept. “I don't need a trophy for championing people,”. “Ever since the beginning of my career, I have used my platform to amplify marginalized voices.”
Instead of focusing on herself, Lizzo gave her time and her spotlight to 17 activists, and I am incredibly privileged to have been one of them. In front of the world, Lizzo lifted up , the organization I started in 2020 to make our workplaces, our government, and our communities finallyfor moms. Over the past two years, our movement has fought for policies including paid family leave and affordable childcare, abortion access, and equal pay — because until moms have that structural and cultural support, we’ll never achieve true equity.
