Singapore's Loh Kean Yew was defeated by Viktor Axelsen in the men's singles final at the German Open. Despite a valiant comeback, Loh couldn't overcome the two-time Olympic champion. Meanwhile, Yeo Jia Min secured her first BWF title since 2019 in the women's singles.

Singapore's hopes of a singles sweep at the German Open were dashed on Sunday (March 2) as Loh Kean Yew fell to two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen in a hard-fought 54-minute match. Axelsen, the tournament's top seed, took the first game 21-19 in a thrilling contest. While it appeared the Dane would cruise to victory in the second game, Loh, the tournament's second seed, mounted a remarkable comeback, saving eight championship points before Axelsen eventually secured the win 21-18.

Loh, ranked 15th in the world, entered the match with a 2-10 head-to-head record against Axelsen, the world number four. His last victory against the Dane came at the Denmark Open in 2022. Despite the loss, Loh's journey to the final was impressive. On Saturday, he defeated Japan's Koo Takahashi 21-13, 21-14 in 46 minutes to reach his first tournament final since winning the Super 300 Spain Masters last year. In other women's singles action, Yeo Jia Min clinched her first Badminton World Federation (BWF) title since 2019, defeating Vietnam's Nguyen Thuy Linh 21-16, 21-17 in 41 minutes at the Westenergie Sporthalle in Mulheim, Germany. Yeo's last BWF title came at the Super 100 Hyderabad Open in August 2019, and her most recent title was the Polish Open last year, an International Challenge event one grade below the BWF World Tour structure. The finals appearances of Yeo and Loh were hailed as a 'cause for celebration' by Singapore Badminton Association president Lawrence Leow. 'It couldn’t come at a better time as we celebrate SG60 as this is possible only because of the dedication and efforts of all of Team Singapore - parents, coaches, players and administrators - over the decades,' he said
