Texas, Washington look to build on bounce-back seasons in Alamo Bowl
Coach Steve Sarisian can provide more evidence he has the Texas program headed in the right direction by ending the season on the right note with a victory over Washington on Thursday.The Longhorns sputtered to a 5-7 record and lost six straight for the first time since 1956 under first-year coach Steve Sarkisian. The Huskies fired second-year coach Jimmy Lake midseason — a program first — and dropped their final four games while lurching to an 4-8 finish.
“I hope it doesn't go that way again,” Sarkisian said. “My neck was sore after that. I felt like it was a tennis match. But you know, bowl games, they're crazy in how they can go. Obviously, Washington has got a very explosive offense. We're going to have to score, we understand that. But hopefully we don't have to get ourselves to 60.”There’s no RGIII 2.0 in this year’s game, though UW has a Heisman-caliber quarterback of its own in Indiana transfer Michael Penix Jr.
A loss won’t erase the gains Texas and Washington have made this season. A win won’t catapult either to next year’s national championship, either. But there’s a bit more than pride at stake Thursday night.
