People who reported loss of taste or smell due to a COVID-19 infection had twice the number of neutralizing antibodies compared to people who also got the virus but could still smell and taste normally, new research shows.

Dec. 15, 2022 –

Loss of smell and taste during COVID-19 infection along with high antibody levels was more common in men than in women, according to the study published this week in the journalResearchers analyzed data for 306 adults who donated plasma between April 2020 and June 2020 after recovering from COVID-19. Of them, 196 self-reported affected sense of smell and 195 reported affected sense of taste.

The study authors wanted to understand antibody levels because knowing more about them can help direct scientists toward improved COVID-19 treatments or diagnosis methods, they wrote. High neutralizing antibody levels have been linked with more severe disease in prior studies, the authors noted. But their results did not show a relationship between antibody levels and “markers of COVID-19 severity, including duration of symptoms and whether hospitalization was required,” they wrote.

Previous research has shown that between 43% and 62% of people who got COVID-19 had impacts to their senses of taste or smell.
