M3GAN's marketing campaign made waves and thankfully the movie lives up to the hype. Read rilaws' review:
, a horror-sci-fi-comedy about a toy gone bad, viral fame can be a poisoned chalice. A buzzy marketing campaign, just ashas had, can obviously help gin up enthusiasm, especially for a movie being released in the doldrums of January. But how much enthusiasm is too much? Expectation can hamper a gimmicky little movie like this, a fatestands up to its hype. It’s funny in ways anticipated and not, and there is enough suspense—or something like suspense—to balance out the coy winks to the audience.
That comedy is judiciously applied, aimed at M3GAN herself but also at Gemma, whose laid-back energy belies an embarrassing faith in technology, one that eventually threatens to be her undoing. I suppose therein lies the film’s social message. New interconnected gadgets are cool and all, but there is still great value, and safety, in analog life.
