MaDongSeok To Produce And Star In Hollywood Film Adaptation Of 'HellDivers'
On June 22 local time, Deadline published an exclusive report announcing that Ma Dong Seok would be both producing and starring in an English-language film adaptation of Nicholas Sansbury Smith’s best-selling sci-fi novel series “Hell Divers.” According to Deadline, “the film will draw from the first three books in the series.”
Ma Dong Seok will play the leading role of Xavier in the feature film, which will also be produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions, as well as Chris S. Lee and Oscar-nominated VFX supervisor and animation director Jerome Chen. While the adaptation already has a writer—J.P. Davis of “Plane” and “The Contractor”—there is reportedly no director attached to the project just yet.
“Hell Divers” is set in a post-apocalyptic universe two centuries after World War III has poisoned the planet, with the final bastion of humanity living on massive airships that circle the globe in search of a habitable area to call home.
Meanwhile, Chen remarked, “As a longstanding fan of the books, I’m beyond excited to shepherd this adrenaline-filled story forth together with this great team of storytellers and see Don [Ma Dong Seok’s English name] breathe his special brand of grit and emotion into the character of X.” Ari Arad chimed in, “I couldn’t be more excited to have Don Lee [Ma Dong Seok] join our ‘Hell Divers’ team. His talent and charisma are undeniable, and I know that he will embody Xavier’s bravery and spirit in a way that will thrill audiences around the world.”
