Tickets were expensive, but the native of Bay Shore, New York, took his son to “a few” games during his childhood years. In time, the younger Key grew into a Division I prospect while playing at Long Island Lutheran in nearby Glen Head. There was the time father and son ran into Knicks television host Al Trautwig while headed to their seats on the Chase Bridge and got a photo with the younger Key and the broadcaster.
They’ve made memories together inside “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” but this time will be different. This time, Key Jr. will be on the court leading“All my family is going to be there,” Key Jr. said. “Family, grandparents, everybody. I was joking, they’re going to look in the stands and there’ll be a Zed Key section at Madison Square Garden.”The game isn’t just a chance to see a dream come true or opportunity to relive cherished memories.
“I’m not saying we’re asking what he did against Rutgers every night because that was a tremendous offensive performance, he can’t have the gaps in consistency that we saw last year,” coach Chris Holtmann said. “We’ve got to help him with that and challenge him with that. He’s now a junior. With that comes expectations and one of the expectations consistency in performance.”Key has scored in double figures in seven of his first nine games after posting 11 double-digit scoring games last season.
