Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has rubbished claims by his former protege Najib Razak that a sex allegation surrounding a member of his current Cabinet team has been handled differently compared with a scandal in 1998.
Although he did not name anyone, most observers believed Najib was referring to current Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali and then Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who was sacked from the government in 1998 before being jailed subsequently for sodomy and corrupt practices. In a blog post titled Contradiction, Tun Dr Mahathir said he has been accused of contradicting himself in his response to the recent sex scandal compared with events in 1998.
In an earlier post on the blog last Tuesday, Dr Mahathir had repeated his claim that the video clips in the recent scandal were circulated"clearly for political purposes, specifically to block the success of a particular individual".
