'This isn’t some superficial rom-com makeover—the clothes tell their own story,' shares one Vogue writer.
stars Jennifer Lopez as Marisa Ventura, a—well—Manhattan maid who falls in love with Senatorial candidate Christopher Marshall . The only catch? After seeing Marisa try on a wealthy woman’s dress , Marshall thinks Marisa is a socialite staying at the hotel, not an employee. Cue the charade of Marisa then trying to keep up her rich-girl image throughout the film, all in the pursuit of love.
Now, it’s important to note that movie makeovers in rom-coms are a tired trope. They reinforce the idea that women need to be stylish and beautiful—or in Marisa’s case, rich—in order to be loved. But hear me out: The one in, she isn’t necessarily doing it so that Christopher loves her. It may be the initial reason why she slips into her wealthy-woman disguise, but the more she does it, the more she realizes she’s doing it for herself.
after he finds out her true identity. “Half the time I’m a stereotype that they make fun of. The other half of the time, I’m just invisible.”It’s what makes Marisa’s style transformation powerful and endearing. One of the best scenes in the movie is when Marisa emerges atwearing an unforgettable strapless peach chiffon gown, punctuated with a hefty diamond wreath necklace by Harry Winston.
Marisa isn’t the only feast for the eyes in the film, however. As she tries to snag Christopher for herself, villainous socialite Caroline Lane delivers some impeccable outfits in the process. It’s literally her wardrobe that Marisa borrows from, after all. She has this minimal, classic aesthetic about her that’s just so New York. When she has a mini meltdown at the concierge desk, she sports a white beaded V-neck sweater—you know, casual day wear.
