Junny Lal Awm Pui, a maid, pleaded guilty to cruelty charges under the Animals and Birds Act for beating Boyboy, a 15-year-old poodle, causing severe pain and trauma. The incident highlights the need for humane treatment of pets, especially when instructed by employers.
A report prepared by two veterinarians indicated that a 15-year-old poodle named Boyboy suffered severe pain and trauma due to abuse. Junny Lal Awm Pui, 26, admitted to three charges under the Animals and Birds Act, including cruelly beating an animal and causing unnecessary pain and suffering. The judge stressed that while Pui followed her employer's instructions to discipline the dog by hitting it, she should have controlled her strength.
The veterinarians noted that the blows to Boyboy's head likely caused painful head trauma and incapacitation. The Straits Times has reached out to the National Parks Board (NParks) to inquire about any actions being taken against the employer, a 37-year-old woman referred to as Heng. Boyboy had been living with Heng since July 5, 2023, following the end of his owner's relationship with Lai, Boyboy's previous owner. Heng instructed Pui to confine Boyboy to a balcony and feed him separately from her other two dogs. On January 22, 2024, after Boyboy started eating his food before being allowed to do so, Pui struck him four times on the head, as instructed by Heng
