this is what the father, known as Dad, asks his 11-year-old daughter, Rag. Then Dad adds: “To the sun and back 30,000 times. And it’s not even our sun. It’s a sun on a distant galaxy and we’re taking a slow spaceship a very long time and there’s a lot of head wind. It’s quite a trip.”
But sometimes he will write scenes and discover they all seem to miraculously belong together. “If they seem like they all belong in the same file, then I'll leave them there and keep working on things that way,” shares Affleck. With his bedtime stories he would create a new character in a new impossible situation just to keep things interesting. “And I would see if I could find for them a believable path to a triumphant conclusion,” he adds.

They live in a bleak dystopian world where a plague has wiped out half the population and destroyed nearly all the world’s females. Rag’s mom appears in flashbacks. Everyone has to fend for themselves and carve out whatever existence they can.
