Daniel Rees, 60, won’t be eligible for parole until he serves 30 years in prison for the murder of 23-year-old Rachael Johnson.

AKRON, Ohio — A Summit County judge sentenced a man to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to the 1991 killing of a 23-year-old woman.

WOIO reports that Johnson’s father, Lawrence Johnson, became emotional during Friday’s sentencing, yelling at Rees “Don’t even look at me! Don’t even look at me! He deserves to pay back what he took.”According to prosecutors, Johnson was out with a friend on March 30, 1991, when their car broke down in the area of Dan Street in Akron. Johnson reportedly walked away from the vehicle after it broke down.

The case had been cold for nearly 30 years, but genealogy DNA led to the arrest of Rees in March of 2020.
