A man has been charged with first-degree murder and appeared in court on Tuesday in connection with a suspicious death on Ditidaht First Nation.
Derian Tate has been charged with first-degree murder for the death on Ditidaht First Nation and appeared in court on Tuesday to determine whether he can be released on bail, but it was adjourned until Oct. 8 so he will be held in custody until that time. Lake Cowichan RCMP officers were first called to the home on Ditidaht First Nation around 7 a.m. on Sept. 28 and found a deceased man.
A man was taken into custody without incident shortly after. Police did not specify if Tate was the man who was taken into custody.Cindy Daniels, Chief of Cowichan Tribes, says this death has had a great impact on the community. “For an isolated reserve like that, everybody is directly related, and so every one of them has suffered severely,” Daniels told CHEK News on Sept. 30.When police were first investigating the suspicious death, the area was placed under lockdown and residents were asked to stay inside and keep their windows closed.Laura has been working with CHEK since 2021 and is a graduate from Langara College’s journalism program.
