Richard Dujardin, 77, of Providence, Rhode Island, was crossing the Kilbourn Avenue Bridge in downtown Milwaukee when it raised to a 90-degree angle, causing him to fall about 70 feet.
MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin — A Rhode Island man and longtime journalist fell to his death Monday afternoon when a drawbridge opened as he was walking across, reports say.
Richard Dujardin, 77, a former religion reporter from Providence, R.I., was about halfway across the Kilbourn Avenue Bridge in downtown Milwaukee when it began to open,. Dujardin grabbed onto a side railing and held on for about one to two minutes before falling 70 feet onto concrete, the Journal Sentinel reports.
The Associated Press reports Dujardin suffered a head wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Dujardin’s wife, Rosemarie, was with her husband but crossed the bridge safely, reports say. Authorities are now trying to figure out how the bridge operator, who works remotely, failed to see Dujardin on surveillance cameras before opening the bridge. Police tell the Journal Sentinel they do not believe the bridge operator, who has been placed on leave, committed a crime.
Dujardin reportedly was hard of hearing and walked slowly, and also was looking at an iPad as he crossed the bridge.
