A 35-year-old man was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for relentlessly stalking his former employee for nearly two years. Sven Teo Jin Kiat followed the 29-year-old victim to her workplace, home, and public transportation, sending her unwanted gifts and persistent emails expressing his love.
A man who persistently stalked his former employee by lurking near her workplace and the void deck of her residence was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on January 13. Sven Teo Jin Kiat, 35, admitted to one charge under the Protection from Harassment Act, with another similar charge taken into consideration. From June 2023 to December 2024, the victim, whose identity is protected by a gag order, filed seven police reports against Teo for stalking her.
The 29-year-old victim informed authorities that Teo would often spy on her at her apartment complex, park his car close to her home, wait for her outside her building, and follow her to bus stops and MRT stations.Deputy Public Prosecutor Gladys Lim revealed that the victim had previously worked at Teo's salon. During their employment, Teo confessed his romantic interest in her, but she rejected his advances as he was married. After leaving Teo's salon, the woman was hired at another salon, which assigned her to various branches in locations like Kent Ridge and Toa Payoh. From January 2023 to September 2024, following the end of her employment with Teo, he would frequently loiter and appear at places where she would be present, including the void deck of her residence. DPP Lim stated that Teo would also trail her on her commute to and from work while she used public transportation. 'She would often see his car trailing behind the bus she was taking, and he would follow her on the MRT,' the prosecutor explained. On at least four occasions, Teo also sent her unwanted gifts, such as a Christian Dior bag and food items accompanied by notes expressing his love for her. From January to October 2024, Teo sent the victim over 30 emails from at least seven different email addresses, professing his love and requesting a meeting. In these emails, Teo labeled her as cruel and heartless for not responding to him and urged her to retract her police complaints against him. In January 2024, Teo was investigated by the police for stalking the victim. Upon the conclusion of the investigation, he received police advice to refrain from any illegal activities. The DPP emphasized that as a result of Teo's actions, the victim felt harassed and distressed, constantly worrying about his potential actions. Even after being charged with stalking and released on bail in late 2024, Teo continued to stalk the victim on multiple occasions. Seeking a jail term of three to four months, DPP Lim argued that it was evident the victim was deeply distressed during the nearly two-year period of relentless stalking by Teo. 'She became so vigilant to the point of employing the help of third parties to monitor if she was being stalked. She received unwanted gifts, unwanted professions of love... she would see him on an almost daily basis when she was on the way to work and on the way home. 'The accused was like an unwanted surveillance camera, and the victim was horrified by his actions,' the prosecutor concluded
