The Man Who Fell to Earth has been canceled after one season on Showtime.
The Man Who Fell To Earth will not be back for season 2 at Showtime. Based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis and a follow-up to the 1976 film starring David Bowie, the series starred Chiwetel Ejiofor as an alien who arrives on planet Earth and has to save it during a pivotal point in history. The cast also includes Naomie Harris, Clarke Peters, and Bill Nighy.
Paying tribute to Bowie, with each episode titled after one of his songs, The Man Who Fell to Earth debuted in April. It was greeted with generally positive reviews, with particular praise for the performances of Ejiofor and Harris. Series co-creator Alex Kurtzman had mentioned plans for a second installment of the adaptation, sharing his ideas for how the show could potentially expand if it returned.
Where Did Showtime’s Man Who Fell To Earth Go Wrong? It's worth noting that The Man Who Fell To Earth debuted during a hectic time for television. It arrived during late April and into early May, when there was a rush of comedies and dramas premiering to qualify for the 2022 Emmy nominations. Better Call Saul debuted its much-anticipated final season the week before.
It's difficult to say whether The Man Who Fell to Earth would have fared better under different circumstances. But in a different era, it's easy to see how a star-studded sci-fi series with name recognition would likely have a better chance to grow and evolve, particularly given Showtime's reputation for letting shows continue almost into double-digit seasons. That wasn't the case for this new take on a familiar story.
