Marcus Chin takes on his most extravagant role yet as veteran drag queen Monica in the anticipated sequel to 'Number 1'. The article delves into the challenges Chin and the cast faced during filming, including the elaborate costumes and makeup, logistical hurdles, and unforeseen accidents. Despite these obstacles, the cast demonstrated remarkable professionalism and camaraderie, proving their dedication to bringing this comedic spectacle to life.
Marcus Chin , a veteran Singaporean actor, takes on his most outlandish role yet in the highly anticipated sequel to the hit local comedy Number 1. Chin revealed at a press conference on January 15th that he had expressed his desire to be part of a sequel to Number 1 back in 2020, directly to director Ong Kuo Sin. That wish was granted, with director Ong and actor-scriptwriter Jaspers Lai creating the role of Monica, a veteran drag queen, specifically for the 70-year-old Chin.
Chin readily embraced the challenge, stating that as an actor, he is capable of portraying any role and found the experience to be unique. His last foray into cross-dressing was as Bao Meili, a wealthy woman with a hilariously inaccurate Chinese pronunciation, in Jack Neo's Comedy Nite in the early 2000s.While Chin was enthusiastic about the role, the costume and makeup proved to be the most demanding aspect of the performance. Applying his makeup took an extensive two to three hours, with an hour dedicated solely to his eye makeup. This required Chin to arrive at the makeup room as early as 7am, with filming only commencing around 2pm. The costumes, which included layers of padding, corsets, and stockings, added another layer of complexity. The six-inch heels he wore also posed a challenge, demanding extra care while walking, particularly in the humid performance hall where they filmed. Adding to the challenges, the actors revealed that even simple bathroom breaks were a logistical hurdle. The elaborate costumes necessitated complete removal, which took up valuable time. During filming, they even had to limit their water intake to avoid frequent restroom trips. Adding to the on-set humor, Jaspers, who plays Money, a flamboyant drag queen, suffered a fall down the stairs during a rehearsal for a dance scene. Despite the pain in his right leg, Jaspers persevered, receiving assistance from Mark and Darius during filming. The experience showcased his dedication and professionalism, leaving his fellow castmates impressed by his resilience. To further illustrate the commitment of the cast, local actress Gina Tan, who plays Chee Beng's wife Marie, disclosed that she was diagnosed with pneumothorax, a partially collapsed lung, just months before filming commenced in Thailand. Undeterred, she managed to complete her scenes, including a demanding sequence involving singing and dancing, showcasing her remarkable strength and determination
