An African American deputy sheriff has sued Marin County alleging that he has been harassed, denied promotions and subjected to other unfair treatment because of his race during his 11 years on the force.
“This lawsuit should serve as a wake-up call,” Lundie’s lawyer, Jennifer Reisch, said in a written statement. “Racial discrimination is rampant throughout Marin institutions and culture, and the Sheriff’s Office is no exception. Make no mistake about it: this is not an isolated incident, and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office needs to urgently revamp its practices and procedures to put an end to the racial bias that permeates its culture.
According to the suit, the sheriff’s office has five Black deputies on a staff of more than 200, and two of them joined the department less than a year ago. Black residents comprise just under 3% of the county’s population. According to the suit, Lundie applied for promotion to sergeant seven times without success despite receiving high scores in evaluative interviews. The interviews were conducted by three panels: one of peace officers from outside the department, one of community members and another consisting of sheriff’s office lieutenants.
They criticized Lundie for spending too much time reading to children at the Martin Luther King Jr. Academy in Sausalito instead of policing, the suit alleges.
