He took to acting naturally—his mother was an actress, he showed talent early on with spot-on impersonations, and had an early job working as a cinema usher. Despite his obvious talent, his childhood was marred by his parents’ alcoholism and a strained relationship with his father.
He dropped out of his military high school after clashing with the faculty, and was rejected from the Army due to a tricky knee. Instead, the teenager moved to New York to study theater. He honed his extraordinary acting talent under the wing of Stella Adler—she developed his naturalistic approach, which would go on to steer movie acting away from glossy theatrics toward a rough, emotional realism.
This determination to forge his own path got him accused of being “difficult” but it was soon clear the young actor was onto something special. His first film role was as a paraplegic in 1950’swrote “Brando as the veteran who endures the most difficult time is so vividly real, dynamic and sensitive... Out of stiff and frozen silences he can lash into a passionate rage with the fearful and flailing frenzy of a taut cable suddenly cut. Or he can show the poignant tenderness of doctor with a child.
