The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the death of an 81-year-old man who was attacked by a group of pit bulls as an accident.
Ramon Najera was killed Friday afternoon after three dogs got loose from their West Side yard and attacked him, public safety officials said. His wife, 74, was also mauled by the dogs and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Fire Chief Charles Hood called the attack “horrific” after his firefighters had to fight off the dogs as they tried help Najera, who was being dragged by a dog. A fire captain was also bitten during the incident.Najera and his wife were visiting relatives in the 2800 block of Depla Street just before 2 p.m. when the three Staffordshire terriers, a breed of pit bull, attacked the couple as they were getting out of their car.
