29-year-old MeetMckayla is running for Congress to bring power back to the people 👏🏾

“This crisis,” she continues, “has further proved exactly why we need more just policies like Medicare for all, living wages, reparations, and a Homes Guarantee. I used to work in retail, I have close friends who are homeless, including my godmother. All of this hits close to home."

But Wilkes's financial precariousness meant she had little room for error, and she entered a cycle of poverty and imprisonment. She officially decided to jump into the congressional race in 2018, inspired by the campaigns of Vermont senator Bernie Sanders and New York City representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “The year that I was incarcerated, I had to be hospitalized for two weeks, because I had blood clots behind each knee. I was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis," Wilkes shares. "My health insurance said that they weren’t going to allow me to take the medicine that I needed to live.
