The alleged hackers behind the Medibank breach have included a satirical meme as they demand the private health insurer pay the ransom within 24 hours to stop them publishing the customer data.
“They’ve also just in the last half hour updated the post again with a link to a YouTube video which is actually Mark Humphries, the comedian at the ABC and his satire about the Medibank drama.
"In fact, paying could have the opposite effect and encourage the criminal to directly extort our customers, and there is a strong chance that puts more people in harm's way by making Australia a bigger target.Chair of the Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee Peter Khalil told Sky News Australia the Government supported Medibank's decision not to pay the ransom.
The private health insurer has not released information about when the ransom or communication was received and how much has been requested for security reasons. The health giant reported only about 500,000 customers had private health claims accessed - 160,000 from Medibank, 300,000 from Ahm and 20,000 from overseas.
About 5,200 My Home Hospital patients were also caught up with some personal and health claims data accessed, including roughly 2,900 next of kins were caught in the breach.
