Futures sci-fi short story: Merry Christmas from the Bremmers
The story behind the storyIt seems to be popular, in some circles, to deride them as cheesy bragging, but I actually think it’s quite nice to find out how my friends and relations feel about the year they’ve had, what they want to remember and tell people is important to them.
When 2020 hit us like the proverbial freight train, I sent more holiday cards than ever. I wasn’t rushing around going to this Christmas tea and that New Year’s gathering and the other Solstice party, but the urge to connect was still there. And I thought about other apocalypses, and this story was born.
One of the great things about writing fiction is that nobody stops you from putting things you like in it. So this story has several references people from different parts of my life might find entertaining. One of the references is literary, of course, rather than personal: two young sisters whose given names are Ruth and Margaret, who love their Uncle Jim and their boat … might sound familiar to a few people.
