Omar Narváez will return to the New York Mets in 2024 after triggering his player option.

Narváez played in just 49 games last season, as he slashed .211/.283/.297/.580 with two home runs and seven RBI. He was the Opening Day starter for the Mets behind the plate, but his left calf strain paved the way for the rise of rookie Francisco Alvarez and when he returned he ended up in a backup role.

With Alvarez under team control and coming off a season in which he batted .209 but slammed 25 home runs and 63 RBI, he’ll be the starter in 2024 and Narváez will remain the backup. Before he joined the Mets on the one-year contract before the 2023 season, he played with the Chicago White Sox, the Seattle Mariners and the Milwaukee Brewers.

He broke in with the White Sox in 2016 after Chicago acquired him in the Rule 5 Draft from Tampa Bay. He spent three seasons with the team before he was dealt to the Mariners, where he played one season. There, he had one of his best offensive seasons, as he slashed .278/.353/.460/.813 with 22 home runs and 55 RBI.

The Mariners dealt him to the Milwaukee Brewers before the 2020 season and he was named a National League All-Star in 2021 after he slashed .266/.342/.402/.743 with 11 home runs and 49 RBI.Copyright ABG-SI LLC. SPORTS ILLUSTRATED is a registered trademark of ABG-SI LLC. All Rights Reserved.
