The San Antonio-based nonprofit, housed at Our Lady of the Lake University on the West Side, has named a new board chair and vice-chair.

With his own family’s experience, Garza said his story emphasized the importance of sharing struggles“Oftentimes as parents, we protect our children and we don’t share our stories or struggles that happened in years past,” he said. “It’s unfortunate because it skips generations, and MACRI gives an opportunity to share those stories so we can build a concrete foundation on how we can build toward the future.
Garza, who also served as chair of the organization’s governance committee, said during his one-year term, he will be working with Herrera, newly appointed vice-chair, said it is important to document and have a repository for the history of Mexican Americanin the United States. She credits the women in her mother’s family for being strong influences and“I’m so indebted to these women who were my role models growing up,” Herrera said, adding she will ensure her family’s stories are archived.
