Exhibition game with El Tri in June could mean that the United States is coming to Snapdragon in July for the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal
One of the fears when the 70,000-seat football stadium in Mission Valley was demolished in 2020 and replaced with one half its size was that the annual visits by Mexico’s national soccer team would end.But El Tri appears to be returning to San Diego, for a June 11 game at Snapdragon Stadium. It has not been formally announced, but TicketMaster and other ticket websites show a Mexico game there on June 11 but without tickets on sale yet. TicketMaster has the opponent as Ecuador.
A June visit by Mexico also might explain the curious decision by CONCACAF — soccer’s governing body for North America, Central America and the Caribbean — to not announce which side of the Gold Cup bracket this summer feeds into the July 12 semifinal at Snapdragon Stadium. CONCACAF has said it will announce it after the completion of the group stage, when the single-elimination quarterfinal bracket is set.
El Tri last played in San Diego on March 22, 2019 at what was then called SDCCU Stadium, a 3-1 win against Chile before an announced crowd of 49,617 in the debut of Argentine coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino.
