I couldn’t let Ma lie in her casket like that. This wasn’t about vanity, either. This was about the woman who taught me that being well-groomed was a sign of self-respect, pride and worth. Ma was pulled out of school at age 10 by her father to take care of her infant brother. Ma’s mother died during childbirth.
Later she showed me she could have been a professional working woman as she drove me on the police beat when I landed as a reporter at the San Antonio Express-News. I didn’t know how to drive.
