Conservative French premier Michel Barnier used constitutional powers to pass a social security financing bill amid opposition and the threat of a no-confidence vote. The move drew criticism from both the left and right, and he conceded a less generous prescription drug reimbursement policy to the far-right National Rally.
France’s Michel Barnier faced a sudden end to his premiership on Dec 2 after opposition parties announced they would support a no-confidence motion against his government, which had been in power for only three months. Barnier, a conservative premier who formed a minority government in September after inconclusive elections, used article 49.3 of the French constitution to push through a social security financing plan, bypassing a likely rejection by the National Assembly.
This move was met with immediate opposition from the far-left LFI and the far-right National Rally (RN), which accused Barnier of failing to negotiate on several aspects of the bill. In a last-minute attempt to appease the RN, Barnier’s office announced it would abandon plans for a less generous prescription drug reimbursement policy
