“The family meeting to discuss this decision was short and sweet,” Coplen said in announcing the change on his campaign facebook page. “Given our decades of service together in the U.S. Army and our perception of significant future national challenges and opportunities, my wife Lorelei and I quickly agreed: “Duty calls!”which covers portions of Cumberland and Dauphin counties, but has a strong Republican voter registration edge.
Coplen is the first to step into that political void, switching to take on a larger campaign in a district that - while also carrying a Republican lean based on past voter performance - on its face is more politically competitive. More recently, the 62-year-old has worked as a teacher and facilitator at the U.S. Army War College. Coplen has also served since 2015 on the Carlisle school board, and been active in the community through the Carlisle Rotary Club and service on the board of Carlisle’s Employment Skills Center.
