A man was found shot dead in a UK-registered van carrying about 10 irregular migrants at a rest stop near Troyes, France, prompting a murder and human trafficking inquiry.
A man was found shot dead in a UK-registered van carrying irregular migrants at a rest stop along a northern French motorway near Troyes, officials said on Oct 3. The body of the 47-year-old man was discovered around 5am on Oct 2 with a gunshot wound to his head, according to Troyes prosecutor Isabelle Verissimo.
Migrant Van Shooting Details Emerge
The van was parked at the Champ l'Epee rest stop, around 30km north of Troyes, which lies south-east of Paris and roughly 300km from the English Channel. It carried UK licence plates.
Verissimo said a suspect believed to have been present at the crime scene was arrested early on Oct 2. Police found around 10 foreign nationals inside the vehicle who were irregularly on French territory, though their nationalities and that of the deceased were not disclosed.
An initial investigation suggested shots were fired at the rest stop as the van stopped to park. Several people then fled the scene, according to the prosecutor's statement.
Investigation Into Migrant Smuggling Opens
The law enforcement office in Reims, north of the crime scene, was placed in charge of the investigation. The Troyes prosecutor's office said a criminal case would be opened on Oct 3.
The charges include murder, attempted murder, unauthorised possession of a weapon, aiding the irregular entry, movement and residence of a foreigner in France as part of an organised group, and human trafficking as part of an organised group.
Context of Channel Migrant Crossings
The case highlights the continuing use of northern France as a transit zone for migrants seeking to reach Britain across the English Channel. A 2025 photo shows migrants in northern France waiting for a smuggler's boat for the crossing.
Authorities have repeatedly dismantled camps and intercepted small boats along the coast. The van involved in this case was far from the coast, indicating that smuggling networks move people overland before attempting sea crossings.
The investigation is ongoing, and no further details about the victims or the suspect have been released.
