V met her husband, an academic from the European Union, in London and decided to stay put after getting a finance job there and paying back her bond. Another common theme that emerged from my unscientific study is what I refer to as the three Fs: family, friends and food. Not necessarily in that order and not necessarily in the way you would imagine.

Having friends in Malaysia adds to this “sense of community and belonging”, she said. “It is our home. There is love for the country irrespective of the challenges.”
