Photographer Mike Drew might not like how smoke tastes, but he sure loves what it does to the light as he drives around southern Alberta.
At 7:30 in the morning, the sun was actually well up into the sky. But thanks to the mist and smoke, it was hard to tell where it was until it found a breach in the overcast and spread shades of peach across the blanket of blue and grey along the ground. On a misty day, that would have been more red but with the smoke adding a yellow tinge, the colour had moved from apple to apricot.And as I headed up into the Porcupine Hills, the yellow tinge got even more prominent.

Wind had cleared it all away from the heights and blown it across the ridge, but looking down on the neatly-mowed hayfield below I could see light on the windrows where the sun was penetrating and soft shadows beyond.

Though the morning mist was gone, there was still a lot of smoke in the air, more than enough to give the light an amber tint.
Thank you, large puppy! I’ll be sure to stop by to apply more scritches the next time I’m out this way. I found some lovely, faded cow parsnip and crawled partway inside a hollow log for a look. But I spent the most time taking pictures of a geranium leaf that had turned bright orange, red and yellow. Fascinating how the green just erodes away and reveals the colours underneath.
