Beloved coach was 'a father figure, a great man, a person who helped you and also held you accountable'

Mike Williams coached the Escondido High School boys basketball team from 1971-96. He won only one league championship and went to two San Diego Section playoff semifinals. His overall record was 277-349.“Mike Williams was much more than a basketball coach, he was a life mentor,” said Paul Baldwin, who played for Williams and then had Williams on his staff for four of his 23 years as coach of the Cougars.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Escondido High’s gym. Baldwin will speak, as will Ray Johnson, the winningest basketball coach in CIF-San Diego Section history; Jerry Haynal, one of Escondido’s all-time great players; former athletic director Steve Bridges; and former baseball coach Bill Kutzner.

“The High School Sports Association named its Sportsmanship Award for Mike Williams. What does that tell you about the man? I never heard him say a bad word ... well, maybe once.”“I tried to emulate him by working with everyone,” he said.
