Victorian Aged Care Minister Luke Donnellan has quit the Labor ministry after he was accused of paying Labor Party membership fees on behalf of others as part of a branch-stacking operation led by former powerbroker Adem Somyurek.
It makes Mr Donnellan the fourth minister to leave his post in relation to the branch-stacking affair exposed in 2020 byMr Byrne is the first witness to face questions at a public IBAC hearing investigating the misuse of taxpayer-funded staff and community grants. “I thank Luke for his contribution to the government in his various ministerial portfolios, particularly his hard work in child protection, disability and ageing,” he said.
Mr Andrews said he would make no further comment due to ongoing inquiries and announcements on cabinet changes would be made in due course.Mr Byrne said the Labor Party was “completely out of control” and he had witnessed events he didn’t think he’d ever see in the modern ALP. “He had a view that he put [the Socialist Left] were recruiting and he was going to respond to that and take those people out … remove their preselection,” Mr Byrne said.
