A federal judge temporarily blocked parts of a Missouri law that would have prohibited abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy, putting on hold one of the most restrictive limitations on abortion in the nation.

The law, which provided exemptions for medical emergencies but not for cases of incest or rape, was slated to take effect Wednesday. U.S.

Western District of Missouri Senior Judge Howard F. Sachs, who was appointed by former President Jimmy Carter, issued the order after hearing oral arguments Monday.
