Missouri is set to carry out the first execution of an openly transgender person in the U.S.

Parson for clemency to consider commuting Ms. McLaughlin’s death sentence.Newsletter Sign-upCatch up on the headlines, understand the news and make better decisions, free in your inbox every day.“It is an incredibly hard thing to know someone can save you but choose not to,” Mr. Komp said. “This was an ideal case to grant clemency—a circumstance where Amber had no chance even before she was born, and a jury deadlocked, refused to return a death sentence.
A federal judge vacated Ms. McLaughlin’s death sentence in 2016, finding trial counsel was ineffective and made an error in not presenting expert testimony about her mental health that could have helped her. The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals ultimately reversed the judge’s opinion. At one placement, a foster parent smeared feces on Ms. McLaughlin’s face, according to the clemency petition. Later her adoptive father beat her with a homemade paddle, split her scalp after slamming her head on a deep freezer, and used his police-issued stun gun against her.
