Players have rejected Major League baseball’s “best and final offer” to end the sport's lockout.

By Derrick Goold St. Louis Post-Dispatch JUPITER, Fla. — Presented with a"final" and"best" offer from Major League Baseball's owners an hour before Tuesday's deadline of their creation, the union decided to reject it, bringing an end to nine consecutive day of negotiations and inviting commissioner Rob Manfred to delay opening day and begin canceling regular-season games.

With more than an hour to go before a deadline of their invention – and also their extension – Major League Baseball’s owners presented what they described to the union as their best final offer to allow for an on-time start to the 2022 season. MLB’s response was to find a foothold on the ticking clock of its own deadline and create leverage on the day – or in the news cycle – by promising one offer. It had a take it or leave it tone.
