Four new ambulances have finally arrived at Mobile County EMS in Semmes. Executive Director Mark Turner says it took 13 months to get them.Daphne's having to wait even longer for a new ladder truck for the fire department.LeJeune says the city is also buying two new fire trucks. He says one should arrive next summer while the other will take more than two years to get.
"Shocked. Shocked. We've been expecting you know, a year, later in the summer, and even okay, year and a half. Two years at the most, but we were completely shocked at how long this is going to take for fire trucks. But it's across the board, garbage trucks take a year. So we've been conditioned for if you're going to order something, it's going to be about a year," said LeJeune.
One firetruck dealership representative tells NBC 15 News part of the problem is a chunk of the workforce didn't return to the factories after the pandemic and new workers aren't entering that sector of the workforce. The representative says there's routine shortages of a variety of parts, everything from radiators to axles.Turner says before the pandemic, it would take 60-120 days to get a new ambulance.
"There's some that are on the street that have over 400,000 because of this issue," said Turner. "We like to move them to reserve somewhere around the 200,000 mile mark."Loading ...
