The Halifax native had to spend his share of time as a scratch after the Mooseheads added forward depth in 2022-23 so he will benefit from increased time in Truro this year. He will remain a leading candidate for callups.
"We had some conversations and, at the end of the day, he was he was kind of going to start out in a little bit of the same situation he was in last year," Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell said."We knew that was going to be difficult for him so he just felt he wanted to go down to junior A right now, play a lot and get his game back. He'll get some opportunities there and that will be really good for him.
"We love the kid and we're happy he's going to be playing. We wish him the best and who knows what'll happen down the road. Obviously we're retaining his rights and hes going to affiliate with us. All of these kids want to be a Moosehead but you also have to play. That's the most important thing right now."
Welsh's departure leaves the Mooseheads with 13 forwards, seven defencemen and two goalies. They will start the regular season with those 22 players but are expected to add a 20-year-old forward at some point over the next few months. The Mooseheads' next pre-season game is on Saturday on the road against the Charlottetown Islanders. Those teams will also meet at the Scotiabank Centre on Sept. 22 to kick off the regular season.
