More Omicron to come as NSW tries to keep cases ‘as low as possible’ | marywardy

Vaccinated NSW residents will be free to travel to Queensland without quarantining from Monday as health authorities are hoping local transmission of the Omicron variant has been contained to a cluster of cases in south-west Sydney.More Omicron cases will be announced on Tuesday and later this week, as further infections in a cluster linked to Regents Park Christian School, St Peter Chanel Primary School and the Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym at Villawood are genomically sequenced.

In south-west Sydney, 16 cases in the cluster have so far been confirmed as infected with the Omicron variant. However, two – a Canberra resident who attended the climbing gym on November 27 and their close contact – are being recorded in the ACT’s numbers. On Monday, NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said containing the spread of Omicron is vital. Health experts and governments around the world are racing to understand the strain amid evidence of higher numbers of infections in the vaccinated, although a largely mild form of the disease.
