Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday the Florida Highway Patrol would soon begin escorting fuel trucks to help resupply gas stations in advance of Hurricane Dorian
, whose representatives helped state officials track fuel shortages in 2017 during Hurricane Irma, reported Friday that more than half of gas stations in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area were out of fuel, stretched from the demand of drivers filling up before the storm hits.A consultant's review requested by the state recommended earlier this year increasing loading capacity at fuel terminals around the state to avoid fuel shortages during storms.
Hurricane Irma caused traffic jams and fuel shortages as 6.8 million people were ordered to evacuate. In response, the Florida Department of Transportation recommended exploring sites where more fuel can be stored, including Wildwood, where Florida's Turnpike intersects with Interstate 75.the agency's recommendations, including the exploration of "strategic" fuel storage locations.
DeSantis said Friday that he had discussed earlier this year with state emergency management director Jared Moskowitz ideas, including creating a state fuel reserve.
